3M Post-it Notes Take the London Fashion Week Runway

Post-its are widely known as an office supply staple, convenient sticky notes perfect for lists and labels.  But that didn’t stop parent company 3M from taking Post-it Notes to London Fashion Week.

The 3M company is most widely known for brand names like Scotch, Command, and of course Post-it.  For London Fashion Week, though, the 3M company opted for a designer collaboration that brought the conglomerate into the realm of fashion.

3M’s design team joined with Fyodor Golan, a fashion brand led by designers Fyoder Podgorny and Golan Frydman, to debut a collaborative collection last week at London Fashion Week.

According to officials, Fyodor Golan drew inspiration from the simple aesthetic and design of Post-it Notes and applied it to the pieces in their collection.  The label was also inspired by the idea of self-expression.

“Post-it Products have come to express an everyday art form and an element of universal self-expression.  The iconic colors and design purity of the Post-it Note have been essential to our collections over the last years.  Moveable printed and embossed leather Post-it Note shapes bring that freedom of expression to the garments through simple messages and reminders,” said Golan Frydman, one-half of Fyodor Golan’s design team.  “We wanted to create interchangeable, individual uniform-like quality to each piece.  Designing limited edition FG Post-it Notes, printed 360 degrees at a perfect cube, connected the two worlds.”

The result of the collaboration was a colorful Autumn/Winter 2017 collection, united under the theme “Never Just A Little.”  Garment designs shared similar elements: experimental cuts, bold colors, and digital-esque textures.

Officials said the label tried to capture the essence of 3M’s distinct sticky notes, while “the designers’ drive and expressive approach established recognizable brand image.”

Fyodor Golan has been known for the label’s unique ability to repurpose materials for fashion using innovative techniques, and 3M welcomed the chance to work with the creative brand.

“We believe in the power of creative ideation and translating concepts in imaginative new ways and are excited to bring the Post-it Note, a mainstay in homes and offices around the world, to life on the runway,” said 3M Chief Design Officer Eric Quint.

After the London show, 3M and Fyodor Golan’s collaborative designs will be brought to Paris and displayed in showrooms for buyers.

Post-it’s starring role in London Fashion Week certainly speaks to the fashion potential behind other everyday, ordinary objects.  Perhaps designers don’t even to leave their desk space to find inspiration for their next runway collection.
