A Birkin Breaks Serious Bank

Ladies covet them.  Men break their banks for them.  What power this alliterative accessory has over the fashion-obssesed population!  To think if the English actress and singer, Jane Birkin, had never sat next to Hermés’ chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas on that fated flight in 1981…we would have never been introduced to one of the most luxurious handbags in the world.  The. Birkin. Bag.

The seemingly forever it-bag has been known to retail at extradorinary prices.  With a starting price around $8,500, the bag’s array of animal skins and miriad of precious metals and diamond-studded hardware only amp up that value.  Kanye West is said to have bought reality television star wife, Kim Kardashian West, a $40,000 Birkin for Christmas in 2013.  Roughly the equivalent of buying a BMW 3 series newly minted.  Who needs a car when you can strut the streets with a brand new Birkin on your arm!

According to Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), one of the most expensive Birkin bags was auctioned off in 2011 for a whopping $203,150 at a Heritage auction in Dallas.  A shiny rouge 30 cm Porosus Birkin with diamond hardware.  Porosus, that’s a diamond-dressed crocodile.

This past Monday marks a monumental moment in handbag history. A matte white Diamond Himilaya Crocodile diamond 30 cm Birkin dripping with 18k worth of white gold and diamond accents was auctioned by a private Asian collector for $300,168! Not only is this the most expensive Birkin to have ever been auctioned off…it is the most expensive handbag to have ever been sold.

In a press release preceeding the sale, auction house Christie’s stated: “It is believed that only one or two of the Diamond Himalayas are produced each year, globally, making it one of the lowest production runs for handbags.”  I’m guessing they won’t cross handbag paths during a grocery store run.

Hailing from Ewing, I'm a Jersey girl through and through meaning endless bagels and constantly defending the state from the stereotypes of Snooki and the rest of the Jersey Shore cast. I love the red carpet of any and all award shows and shamelessly indulge in Fashion Police the next day with an even greater intrigue. I'm an avid Netflix binge-watcher, but could also be perfectly content traveling around Europe with a few of the classics and a map in my bag.
