Burberry London Fashion Week: Layering, Trenchcoats and Luxury Capes

Burberry kept the palette simple for the London Fashion Week show on Feb. 20. Instead, the designers were creative in form, featuring ruffles, asymmetrical cuts and styling, and an entire closet’s worth of capes.

Black, white, and pale blue were the most prominent shades at the show, with models taking the runway to live music at Makers House. The collection drew inspiration from the work of British sculptor Henry Moore.

Shirts were styled loosely with sleeves extending past the hands, or off one shoulder. Loose, ruffled shirts or shirt dresses, silky stripes, and heavy layering all found their place on the catwalk.

In the womenswear especially, Burberry played up the asymmetrical. One piece featured a lacy white chevroned sleeve ending at the elbow, underneath a short gray dress with one long sleeve and an angled cable-knit bodice.

Another outfit channeled classic winter elegance, layering a sweater with capelet-style shoulders over a collared shirt and a sheer lace dress that fell to the calves.

Womenswear especially focused on tops, with multiple outfits leaving out trousers entirely. An oversize sweater with meandering white trim sprayed over the front was styled over an oversized collared shirt and boots (the menswear version was styled with trousers). Many of the looks were paired with simple black boots on rounded heels.

Menswear featured many shirts with lace overlays and sweaters over collared shirts.

Some pieces stuck to classic style and added one surprising element, such as a bold pattern, or a white cape over a simple shirt. One top had an asymmetrical ruffle running from the right shoulder down the left arm, dividing a white top from a scale pattern beneath.

Both men’s and womenswear featured trenchcoats.

At the end of the show, models displayed a collection of couture capes in an array of shapes and materials. Fur, glitter, lace and thick ropes adorned some. Some were bedecked with pearls, others reminiscent of renaissance ruffs, still others recalling Victoria’s secret angels with feathers or bejeweled ropes.

At the time of writing, the show and collection are on the Burberry site.
