Hello, beauty fans! Since Christmas is almost here you know that red is the color of the season! The hardest thing about wearing red lipstick is being able to choose the correct shade to flatter your skin tone. Today, we are going to talk about how to pick the perfect holiday red, a beginner’s guide if you will, so grab your favorite drink, settle in, and let’s talk beauty!

Blue red, orange red, pink red, warm red, cool red, etc. These are all terms we have heard thrown around pertaining to red lipstick, so it’s no wonder that the process of selecting a red shade can be so daunting! But never fear beauty fans for I have a guide that will help get you into the perfect vampy red this holiday season, so keep on reading!

There are 3 little ways in which you can find which type of red suits you best: the color of your veins, the type of jewelry you wear, and your undertone.

Color of your veins

If the color of the veins in your wrist are blue, this means you have cool undertones. If the veins are green then you would have warm undertones. If you can’t tell if they are blue or green then you would be considered neutral.

Type of Jewelry you wear

If gold jewelry looks better on you, you more than likely have warm undertones. If you look better in silver, you more than likely have cooler undertones, and of course, if you look fantastic in both you are neutral.

Undertones

Cool Undertones

People with cool undertones tend to be fair complected, think Emma Stone, and as a result look better in pink or blue based reds’ really anything like a berry red color. Berry tones will also pick up the pink in your skin giving you that va va va voom factor!

Warm Undertones

People with warm undertones tend to have yellow as their undertone and can be either light, medium, or olive complected.

Lighter complexions look absolutely fantastic with a red that has a slight orange base to it. Whereas medium complexions when sporting a golden tan look amazing in bright orange reds. In addition, olive skin is still considered warm even though the undertones tend to be yellow-green, and as such anyone with olive skin looks amazing in earthy tones, like brick reds.

For my deep complected beauty fans, you really have the best of both worlds! You can rock a deep burgundy red or a bright orange-red!

Neutral Undertones

Neutral undertones mean you are neither warm or cool. You can rock anything! No need for a color wheel, lucky you!

These aren’t always foolproof methods, and sometimes the categories can contradict each other. For example, I have golden/warm undertones and look better in gold jewelry, but I have a mixture of BOTH blue and green veins in my wrist. However, after some trial and error you will eventually figure out what tone you are, so don’t stress! Btw I look smashing in orange reds, and when I am not sporting a summer tan I can rock blue reds!

Ultimately, it all comes down to figuring out what your undertones are. if you want a no hassle way of picking a red but have no idea what your undertone is, just go into any beauty counter and have them foundation match you; that will let you know for sure!
