Disney has officially announced their new upcoming developmental project of turning the beloved The Lion King property into a live-action featured film. The production company has also reportedly cast Jon Favreau as the film’s new director.

With Disney’s new string of live action films like Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Pete’s Dragon, and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast film, the company decided to develop a Lion King live action film since 2016’s Jungle Book earned over 1 billion dollars in the theaters worldwide. The Jungle Book box office numbers are almost a match to how much the animated Lion King film made in 1994.

Disney representatives also have reportedly confirmed that their new live action film is going to be put on the company’s roster as fast track to production, meaning the film could be coming to theater’s in the next few years.

Lion King is expected to include songs from the original animated film, which were written by musical geniuses Elton John and Tim Rice. Elton John and Tim Rice’s ballad Can You Feel the Love Tonight won best original song in the 1995 Academy awards and sold over 14 million copies. The Julie Taymor adapted Lion King Broadway musical that debuted in 1997 still runs today and has also won over six Tony awards.

Although Disney fans around the world are raving about the upcoming movie, fans have been commenting their concerns on social media how their favorite characters from the animated classic will look in the live action version of The Lion King. Since the film won’t feature any human characters, fans are eager to know how the characters will look in the new live action film or if there will be any similarities to the studio’s other live action films.

Jon Favreau, who also directed the live-action version of The Jungle Book, announced that Disney is also working on creating a sequel film to The Jungle Book.

Disney has yet to announce the expected released dates to The Jungle Book sequel and live action Lion King films. The next live action remake, Beauty and the Beast, which will be starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens is expected to premiere in theaters on March 17th, 2017.
