From College Hallways To Runway Catwalks: CSU Brings Newest Designers on to The Scene
College, what a time to discover yourself. Many people go in to college with an “idea” of what they want to be or what they want to do with their life. For most people, the “perfect job” they dreamed they would have after college changes. It is hard at eighteen years old to decide the exact path you want to take in life. That is why so many young adults go in to college thinking they know this exact path to take but then after time realize they want something completely different.
Those who truly know their passion and stick with it throughout there schooling are the fortunate ones. At Colorado State University, the students in the apparel and merchandising program are some of these lucky people. To show the public their passion, each year they host their annual senior fashion show at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins. This department has this runway show every spring to allow graduating seniors to showcase collections they have been working so hard on. Every year there are always such a broad range of collections featuring casual day wear, evening wear, costumes, and even bathing suits.
This fashion show gives these young and graduating designers a chance to experience what it is like to put on a professional showing to a big audience. Many graduates have even gone on to work with huge name designers in the fashion industry such as Tory Burch and Calvin Klein. This department at Colorado State Is one of the best at bringing realistic focus on the fashion world and allowing students to grow and experience different aspects of this world. There have also been many students who have started their own fashion business after graduating because of all the knowledge and exposure they have received at this Fort Collins fashion show.
As of 2016, CSU’s design and apparel program was ranked in the top 5 percent nationally. Because of how well this program is doing and how big their senior fashion show has become, different boutiques in the area are always on the watch for the student’s latest collections to feature in their stores. The students always bring forward the newest trends and fashion forward styles that are able to be sold at affordable prices. This design program has defiantly made the city be known widely for their fashion and the demand for it in the community.
The number of boutiques and different retail stores in the area has sky rocketed over the past few years because of the growing fashion scene. Some of these places have even been started by graduates of this program at CSU. Many people in the community like to shop local to support these students and the small businesses, which has allowed the area to become its own little shopping district.
Besides just starting up boutiques and businesses, students from this department have helped the community in numerous other ways. The faculty of this department started “Fashion FUNdamentals”, which is a free summer program lasting two-weeks that allows young teenage girls a chance to learn knowledge about the fashion world and create their own designs. Fort Collins and CSU positively help each other in numerous amount of ways in terms of community support and sponsorships. The department gives credit to their sponsorships for allowing them to do things such as the fashion show and their summer program.
The hope for the future of the apparel and design program at CSU is that it continues to grow and stay national ranked as one of the top fashion schools in the nation. With there amazing staff and exactly students always willing to learn and test new limits, this program is sure to keep moving forward while sending shining students into the world of fashion.
