From a mid class family who enrolled him into a private school to take him off the neighborhood streets, with hard work, his mother paid his tuition. Working a catering job on the weekends, Derrick and his 5 siblings helped her to cook.

Rutledge went to Webster University in St. Louis and received a degree in media studies. He started as a music major, because he is a talented opera tenor, but with some advise from his Professor, Professor Shange that tenors were slender, muscular man (while he was heavy). Devastated, he changed his major.

During this time he started to take photography classes and that’s where he first came into contact with makeup. After he graduated from school, he returned to his hometown, Washington, and started to do makeup for whoever would let him, as volunteer or for $25. This was his practice and how he became a perfectionist. He got a few jobs in department stores within the makeup section and also as a photographer assistant.

He started in the industry in 1993 with BET, as a makeup freelancer. The executives were so impressed at his talent that they hired him. Since then he hasn’t stopped working in the industry. Some of his famous faces include the First Lady of United States, Oprah Winfrey, Beyonce, Kerry Washington, and more.

Currently he has a hair product line Ü OOH SALON CARE. The line is created by the health and nature of the hair.
