After a career spanning decades, 82-year-old Oscar de la Renta will step down as creative director of his eponymous label. In his place will be 48-year-old designer Peter Copping (pictured below). Copping, who was most recently creative director of Nina Ricci since 2009 (before leaving this month), has also worked with labels as varied as Louis Vuitton, Sonia Rykiel and Christian Lacroix.

Both Copping and de la Renta exhibit similar, female-enhancing forms and silhouettes (what the de la Renta brand has come to be known for). Both designers also have been known to focus on previous—and more sophisticated—eras of fashion as creative inspiration.

“Our industry has not always done the best job when it comes to changes in design leadership. My hope is that, in leading this selection, and actively participating in the transition, I can ensure the right design future for our company and brand,” said de la Renta himself in a press release.

Copping will officially take responsibility for all product lines, reporting to chief executive officer Alex Bolen (who is also de la Renta’s son-in-law). His first showcase will be in February 2015 at New York Fashion Week; de la Renta will reportedly be closely working with Copping on the first collection.
