Beatnik was the first youth subculture to favor wearing all black. It represented a philosophy of anti-materialism and was a direct inspiration for the hippies’ movement. The beatnik look became a classic style for those considered “artsy.”

The 1960s beatnik look reappeared on the Alexander Wang 2013 resort collection. This collection illustrated a classic all black beatnik style. The models are wearing a coat and long, skinny trousers. Though the shapes of the top wears of the models are not exactly a classic sweater and they are not wearing beret. Their clothes, the background and their expressions convey the beatnik sensibility: non-material and artsy.
