Trend Alert: Sweatshirts Reimagined
If you thought sweatshirts were getup worthy of dodging friends and acquaintances to avoid being seen when grabbing milk at the grocery on the weekends, the Fashion’s MAGIC trade show at UBM might have you rethinking things.
No longer just the obligatory topper for a pair of sweatpants for watching Netflix, sweatshirts are officially capable of being fashionable. Retailers have caught on to the cozy trend, likely inspired by street stylers who pair oversize sweaters and simple sweatshirts with boyfriend jeans or skinnies and a messy bun and stylish bag. But this fall season, sweats will have more options. WWD reported some of the latest from MAGIC.
JOA took the fringed, hippie look so popular with shirts and dresses and put it across one sweatshirt’s lower shoulders and down the arms, creating a nearly shawled look and hitting another trend: embellished sleeves. The oversized fringe lends a breezy texture element, while the monochromatic off-white keeps it basic. Another monochromatic piece by Evidnt also goes for styled sleeves, which cold-shoulder style with drawstrings at the tops.
Mink Pink gave an interpretation of the classic sweatshirt by lengthening the garment and adding delicate lace to the bottom, which suggests a pairing with leggings for a look that’s almost purely cozy, but still gives a nod to delicate.
And if you’re looking for a more classically cut shirt that still breaks out of status quo, Chiara Ferragni showed a periwinkle version with a set of beaded winking eyes. KMJ also went classic in shape, playing up the embroidery trend with “MAKE SPACE GREAT AGAIN” embroidered on a cotton candy pink sweatshirt.
Wildfox released a grey piece with a higher collar, zipper, two-tone grey material and a quarti-colored set of V’s cutting the front from shoulder to the middle pocket, all of which doesn’t quite mesh as nicely as the more monochromatic pieces. And KMJ’s fleecy V-neck pullover with ribbed trim rides the top of the trends for fluffy as well as bomber style builds, making it ultra current, although whether it will have staying power remains to be seen.
