USA’s ‘Queen of the South’ Renewed for a Second Season

USA’s summer series Queen of the South has officially been renewed for its second season. Although the network is making a major change to the show by replacing the previous show runner, Scott Rosenbaum, with Natalie Chaidez, who will also act as an executive producer for the series.

Queen of the South was adapted from the popular Telemundo telenovela series La Reina Del Sur, which was considered one of the most expensive telenovelas Telemundo has ever produced. USA’s Queen of the South series revolves around the dangerous world of the Mexican drug trade and the powerful cartels who fight to control power in the country. The series revolves around Teresa Mendoa, who is played by actress Alice Braga, who is drawn into the high stakes world of crime and drugs when her drug dealer boyfriend is murdered.

The first season only consists of thirteen episodes, which is set to finish its season this coming September 15th. The show’s pilot episode received 1.39 million viewers and even though the show’s viewership has decreased during its first season run, it is still holding a steady 1.2 million audience viewership.

Natalie Chaidez has previously served as an executive producer on Syfy’s 12 Monkeys series and also acted as a co- executive producer for NBC’s Heroes, and Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles series. She has also previously worked on USA’s In Plain Sight and Necessary Roughness series as a consulting producer.

Queen of the South is one of USA’s new summer dramas that is growing their slate of original content, which joins their esteemed breakout series Mr. Robot. USA Network also plans for their new fall series Falling Water, Shooter, Eyewitness, and their renewed series Colony to creatively contend with their TV network competitors.

Queen of the South was created and produced by Universal Cable Productions and Fox 21 Television Studios. The writing team includes M.A Fortin, David Friendly, Pancho Mansfield, and Joshua John Miller who also serves as an executive producer for the show.
