New York City is known for a lot of things: bagels, pizza, Central Park (and Perk), and—of course—fashion. From jaw-dropping street style to dreamy designer shops, the city is a melting pot of fashionable culture, past, present and future. Here are five “fashionable” things to do in NYC, whether you are visiting for the first time, or a true New Yorker at heart.
1. Visit Madison Avenue: Walking down this world-renowned block is like walking through a three-dimensional version of Vogue. Maybe it’s the upscale shops or beautiful people that give this area its air of sophistication. My advice: grab a latte and a comfy seat and people watch—it is almost as good as watching Gossip Girl.
2. Tour the Museum at FIT: People come from all over the world to visit FIT’s remarkable museum—which seamlessly blends fashion, art and history into an intriguing exhibition. Past themes have been as diverse as 1930’s fashions, to the evolution of the motorcycle jacket.
3. Go shopping at a sample sale: Sample sales have gained a reputation for their crazy prices—and even crazier shoppers (hey, like you wouldn’t resort to unspeakable things to get an Equipment sweater at eighty percent off). Check out sites like Racked.com, or 260SampleSale.com, to get up-to-the-minute information on current and future sample sales (so you can scope out the competition deals).
4. Have breakfast at Tiffany’s (or watch the movie): Audrey Hepburn forever changed the way people viewed Tiffany’s when her character Holly Golightly sited it as her go-to-feel-better spot. Take a cue from Golightly and spend a morning at the mega-jeweler (bagel and coffee in hand). Even if you’re just browsing, it’s still so much fun.
5. Go thrifting: Though you can probably do this anywhere, thrift/vintage shops are incomparable here. Take a whole day aside for this activity, because the more time you put in, the more likely you are to score an awesome find!
