7 Fashion Rules You Must Break Today

Rule #1: Never wear black with navy, or brown with black

This rule comes from the fact that two basic colors will clash over which is dominant. When breaking this rule it is crucial to wear a good amount of both colors in order to show that the look is intentional. Additionally, it’s important to have an anchor, meaning, recur at least one of the colors in multiple points of the outfit.

Rule #2: Do not mix metals

It has long been advised to wear gold, silver, and bronze jewelry separately. However, metallics are actually always neutral making it fine to mix them. With necklaces for instance, it is important to use odd numbers of articles, namely three, when metals are being mixed with jewelry. An unbalanced metal combo is what looks best.

Rule #3: Don’t let your bra show

The bra that is being shown and how it is being revealed must be considered when breaking this rule. This look can be tasteful. Nude bras are not sexy and the bra being worn shouldn’t certainly fit well. No loose bra straps should be hanging down a woman’s shoulder. Also red and leopard prints on a bra should not be showcased. One way to successfully break this rule is with a sheer shirt or unbuttoning the top button of a sweater to reveal some lace.

Rule #4: Mini dresses should not be worn during the day

Mini dresses can definitely be made casually and very chic if accessorized properly. The mini dress should be worn with boots and a day jacket. An over-sized blazer works as well.

Rule #5: You can’t wear all black in the summertime

All black always looks cool. The outfit just shouldn’t consist of all the same materials and textures. Also, accessories with an all black outfit should be bold to intensify the look.

Rule #6: Don’t mix animal prints

Everyone is mixing animal prints lately. It’s hard not to when they look so trendy and fun together, especially during the summer. This look began as an extension of the power-clash and is entirely allowed.

Rule #7: Metallic pieces and sparkles are for the night

Some glitter during the day should be no issue at all. This must be used with caution however. To make these pieces appropriate for the daytime they should be paired with neutral, simple pieces. In addition, the metallics should be lighter colors themselves such as rose gold. With sparkles, hems and accessories such as glitter sneakers are OK.
