A Colorado girl, was suspended from her school on March 25th, 2014, for shaving her head. After her best friend, 11-year-old Delany Clement, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare child-form of cancer, and began chemotherapy, 9-year-old Kamryn Renfro, made the bold decision to shave her head to support her. She stated that she “didn’t want her to go through it alone”, and if given the opportunity, she would do it all over again to support the cause. “It made me feel very special and that I’m not alone”, replied Delany when asked about what she thought about Kamryn’s decision.
Unfortunately, shaved heads are not part Caprock Academy’s school dress code. The administration claims that the dress code was designed to establish “safety, uniformity and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students”. Renfro was reportedly told not to return back to school until her hair was grown back.
However, after a deliberation during a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Caprock Academy, it was voted 3 to 1 that Kamryn Renfro would be allowed to continue to attending school, despite the dress code “violation”. Catherine Norton Braman, the President and Chair of the Caprock Board of Directors, stated that the decision required “extraordinary circumstances”, and that this was one of them. While not every member agreed with the decision, Kamryn is temporarily allowed back in school, until further notice.
