The 57th annual Grammy awards Sunday was a mix of old and new, as current artists took accolades and made tributes to late singers who passed in 2016.
Adele made Grammy history, according to Rolling Stone. Her album 25 took Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, while “Hello,” made Song of the Year and Record of the Year, as well as Best Pop Solo Performance. This is the second time Adele won all three awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year. No other artist has twice won all three honors in one award year.
Throughout the night, Adele praised competing artist Beyoncé, admiring the Lemonade album and saying that everyone at the show loved Beyoncé’s work.
Beyoncé’s Lemonade had carried with nine nominations. The nominations came from diverse genres; they included one for Best Rock Song, one in Best Solo Pop Performance and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
In the end, Beyoncé had Best Music Video for “Formation” and Best Urban Contemporary Album. The artist said she wrote Lemonade to address pain, struggles, and uncomfortable problems.
Another notable artist was Chance the Rapper. Chance had Best New Artist and Best Rap Album for Coloring Book, as well as Best Rap Performance for “No Problem.”
Additional wins throughout the night were Justin Timberlake for “Can’t Stop the Feeling” in Best Song Written for Visual Media, and Best Score Soundtrack went to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
David Bowie took a posthumous Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for “Blackstar.” His album Blackstar also had Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical and Best Alternative Music Album.
Drake won Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance with “Hotline Bling,” after eight nominations. The Chainsmokers’ “Don’t Let Me Down” won for Best Dance Recording.
Artists made tributes to late singers as well as showcased their own talents. George Michael got a tribute song from Adele, Sharon Jones from Sturgill Simpson. Both Bruno Mars and The Time chose to tribute Prince, with Mars going all out in full Purple Rain getup.
