The 21st annual nonprofit AmfAR fundraiser benefit against AIDS will be held at this year’s Cannes Film Festival on May 22 at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes, and will feature a red-themed fashion show dedicated to icon Marilyn Monroe.
The event is held to raise money for the Foundation of AIDS Research. For the past 20 years, the nonprofit has been working to find a cure for AIDS, making enormous strides. Through grants raised by amFAR, a drug that stops the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to child at birth has been developed. According to chairman Kenneth Cole, there are now six types of drugs to treat the disease, four of which have been funded by amFAR. Their goal is to help fund research to find a cure for HIV by 2020.
Carine Roitfelt, overseer of the event for the past two years, has done both black and gold themes. This year, however, the theme is a parade of classic red gowns in honor of Monroe’s classic look, as well as to represent the battle against AIDS. Renowned designers, models, celebrities and musicians flock to the benefit to support the cause, view the designs, participate in a lively auction and watch some great talent.
Among the 35 talented designers are Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Chanel, Christian Dior, Givenchy, Marchesa and Prada.
Entertainment includes a performance by Lana Del Rey. Cannes events have raised over $120 million in the past.
