Philanthropy, described as the desire to improve the well being of human kind, love of humanity in general, demonstrated through charitable acts or donations. Foundations, institutions, or activities intended to improve human welfare have been founded all throughout history. There have been many notable philanthropists throughout history. William Wilberforce was among those, an anti-slavery campaigner who successfully ended the slave trade throughout the British Empire at the turn of the 19th century. More modern day philanthropists such as Lance Armstrong who founded the Live Strong Foundation which empowers, unites, and fights to improve the lives of those affected by cancer.  CEO and executive editorial director of iConcept Media Reedemer Resk’que is a N.Y.C. resident. He currently runs two charitable organizations. Edu-tainment whose mission is to stimulate the minds of today’s youth through utilization of the arts and education. Fashion with Heart’s, his other charity serves as a way to educate and promote good ethical practice in the fashion industry.

Environmentalist’s fight against the harmful radicals that threaten preservation of nature and wildlife. There are many notable environmentalists throughout history among them is John Muir whose endless efforts led to the creation of Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, and millions of other conservations. Muir contributed to the founding of the Sierra Club, in 1892, whose mission was to enjoy, explore and receive the support of the people and government in the preservation of nature by experiencing it’s pleasure’s first hand.

Rachel Carlson was another and was considered by most to be the founder of the 20th century’s modern environmental movement. Carlson studied biology at John Hopkins University and Woods Hole Marine biological laboratory. Carlson published many books such as The Sea Around Us. However, her most controversial piece titled, Silent Spring opened the world’s eyes to the devastating effects pesticides were making in our environment. Due to her diligent research and observations, which were proven correct, pesticides were banned. Present day N.Y.C is now at the forefront of U.S. cities leading the solar energy revolution ranking at #8. Solar energy is pollution free; it reduces chances of global warming and urban smog. It preserves the enormous loss of water generally consumed during the cooling of a fossil fuel burning power plant.

There you have it! Incredible people throughout history fighting for a better tomorrow. If you are interested in getting involved it’s never too late. Stay happy, healthy and Green N.Y.C.
