Its no wonder that Alexander Wang has the reputation that he does – his designs are like no other, and he has completely perfected the art of fashion design. His collection for Balenciaga’s 2015 Resort Collection was heavily influenced and inspired by sailing.
All things sailing were compiled in the new collection, including sails, rope, braids, raincoats, and even rubber boots! Rather than using a traditional navy blue and red color palette, Wang chose to go a different route sticking mostly with the boldness of black on popular designs like the A-Line dress and the strapless romper. He then revamped them to have a duchesse satin skirt or pink silk bands to contrast the waist of the designs. The designs are reminiscent of a night on the water, where simple shirts and bottoms of blazers drape down with a finesse that resemble the sails of a boat or flags blowing in the breezy air.
At the end of the show, Wang appeared, marking his first pre-collection runway show appearance. He talked about all of his hopes and aspirations in the creation of this line. Wanting to bring a “youthful essence” to the brand, according to WWD, Wang chose to break away from the traditional symmetry of the Balenciaga line. Including fluidity in small details from the skirts to even the small hemlines of shirts, he chose to cut away from the body, rather than create designs that would draw more attention to it. It seems Balenciaga has found the light breeze it needed, thanks to Alexander Wang, who, as usual, has outdone himself in yet another collection.
