Matell Inc. is said to be ending their partnership with SeaWorld which means no more SeaWorld Trainer Barbie or any other SeaWorld products. Originally, the SeaWorld doll was sold with a tiny fish pool and a toy whale and a toy dolphin that squirts water, but Matell Inc. will no longer be supporting SeaWorld to due allegations about the mistreatment of the animals.
SeaWorld has been under speculation ever since the documentary Blackfish was released in 2013. This film focuses on Tilikum and other whales kept in captivity at SeaWorld and other facilities around the world and the effect it has on these large and wild animals. Blackfish goes into great detail about how orca whales’ live much longer and happier in the wild whereas they become violent and undergo psychological issues when kept in captivity for most of their lives. Also, the safety of trainers cannot be promised when swimming and interacting with these killer whales.
Animal activists are very happy with Mattel’s decision to not renew their contract with SeaWorld.
“It is very fitting that Mattel would dump Sea World Trainer Barbie,” said PETA spokeswoman Stephanie Shaw. “She’s now able to maintain her animal-friendly image.”
