Beauty Breakthrough: The Reverse Cat Eye

The cat eye has (literally) been around for centuries. Elizabeth Taylor’s glamorous turn as the title role in 1963’s Cleopatra was not just for Hollywood kicks: the cat eye is one of the few enduring makeup looks of now and then. But, like most elements of one’s beauty routine, even makeup tricks as old as time could use a few contemporary tweaks here and there. Enter the reverse cat eye.

While most cat eyes are crafted on the outer eyelid, the reverse cat eye is for the bottom lid and lash line—essentially how your cat eye would look as if inverted. Like typical cat eyes, and unlike most lower lashline eye makeup, the reverse cat eye is very neat and deliberately drawn—with little smudging present. For ensuring that your line is as neat as possible, try Marc Jacobs’ Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Waterproof Eyeliner, $30 (expert tip: try placing a piece of tape at a diagonal to keep liner slip-ups to a less messy minimum).

If you want to take this 2014 cat eye to the next level, take a tip from the Nicholas K runway and draw another flick at the inner corner of your eye. Your cat eye will never be more feline-inspired, and your eyes will look huge and wide-awake. Will you try this dramatic (and slightly grungy) take on the timeless cat eye? Or do you follow the eye makeup rituals of the late-great (and always-wide-eyed) Audrey Hepburn?
