Bergdorf Goodman in New York Celebrates Charles James

Charles James -Metropolitan Museum

This year’s Met Costume Institute Gala showed appreciation for Charles James, and celebrated the new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” The tributes do not end there, as this week Bergdorf Goodman on 57th street, inspired by the Gala, has hired seven designers to decorate its windows with James’ inspired pieces. Designers Giambattista Valli, Libertine, Mary Katrantzou, Ralph Rucci, Rodarte, Rosie Assoulin, and Naeem Khan have all created a piece for the window as their interpretation of James’ work. Their creations are being sold to fans of James’ for $3,500 to $14,000.

David Hooey, senior director, visual presentation at Bergdorf Goodman New York told toovia.com, “It has become a tradition at Bergdorf Goodman to celebrate the big yearly Costume Institute exhibit with a major set of windows. This is out tenth year.” The windows were revealed to the public on May 5, the same day of the Met Gala and will be up through May 19. “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” will be in the museum from May 8-August 10, 2014. The exhibit will explore the career of Charles James, his design process, and the variety of different approaches he used to create his iconic ball gowns. According to the met museum website, 65 of his designs will be available in the museum in the Lizzie and Jonathon Tisch Gallery in the Anna Wintour Costume Center and special galleries on the first floor.
