Best Drugstore Mascara: Maybelline Lash Sensational

There’s nothing worse than buying a $40 mascara only to find that it barely has an effect on your lashes, dries up immediately, and/or clumps all of your lashes together. If you’re looking for an affordable lengthening and volumizing mascara, Maybelline Lash Sensational is my go-to – and I’ve tried my fair share of mascaras.

In terms of lengthening and lifting your lashes, drugstore mascaras don’t get any better. You only need one swipe to see the effect, and just one coat is enough to get a desirable length. The curve of the wand also helps to create the mascara’s famous fanning effect, which widens your eyes for a doe-like appearance.

The product is designed to volumize, which means that you can easily go from sultry lashes to a clumpy mess in one swipe. I’ll admit that the first time I tried the mascara, I was shocked and a little terrified at the unruly black gunk that was left on my eyes. I was used to mascaras that called for a strong hand and a ton of layers. It takes a little practice to get the application right with this one, but once you do, you’ll never go back.

Most volumizing mascaras are hard to tame because they dry up almost immediately post-application, which means that if you go back over your lashes with the wand to try to fix them, you’ll be left with dry globs above your eyes. The more liquid Lash Sensational mascara leaves you a little more time to go in and separate any clumping lashes. My trick is to use a strong hand when first applying from the bottom of the lashes up, because the stiff bristles separate the lashes, and going back with a light hand in clumpy areas to avoid adding any more product.

For those who want lengthened eyelashes that look completely natural, you might have some trouble achieving this with Lash Sensational. With a lot of care and attention, it’s possible to get that look, but you might be better off with a less volumizing mascara. However, you won’t find a better lengthening mascara for such a good price ($8.99 on Ulta Beauty). It’s worth trying.
