“Bridesmaids” Writers Team Up For A New Comedy

Most people laugh just at the mention of the movie “Bridesmaids.” It’s a comedy that can’t quite be matched. Its witty characteristics put a twist on true-to-life circumstances that leave the viewer crying tears of amusement. The movie became such a widespread hit in 2011 that its success has lead writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo to plan for comedy number two. Can the dynamic duo work up a script that makes the laughter ring just as loud?

“Ms. Wiig and Ms. Mumolo will write, produce and star in a wide-release comedy for TriStar Productions, which described the film as the story of ‘best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths, which were, perhaps, not too deep to begin with,’” according to The New York Times.

The two seem to be up to the challenge; one that may be difficult considering it’s Wiig’s first time directing a film. They plan to do whatever it takes to finish, and they are aiming to make it another screenplay worth an Oscar nomination.

This isn’t exactly a “Bridesmaids” sequel as fans had wished, but with Wiig and Mumolo behind and in front of the cameras, it will be far from a disappointment. “Bridesmaids” brought in nearly $288 million to the box office and started a women’s film revolution. Wiig and Mumolo want to reach out to a more gender-focused crowd – something that is not done enough. In fact, NYT reported that of the 129 filmsset for release in 2014, only four are by female filmmakers. But why?

A big change is underway, and Wiig and Mumolo are on their way to being the fire under Hollywood’s you-know-what. The title of the film has not been decided, and the release date is highly anticipated but not yet confirmed.
