Moving out of your parents home is an exciting time in every young adults life. Even though it is exciting, there is a little bit of doubt. You may ask yourself if you can make it on your own, or if you are ready to leave. The answer is yes. Taking the opportunity to live on campus not only provides you with the chance to grow up, but the chance to truly get involved in your school. Living at school allows you time to join clubs, attend school events, and make new friends. Now that you’ve made your decision, you need to decide what you will bring with you.

Mini Fridge– You can go without, but many students see it as beneficial to be able to have cold drinks, microwaveable meals, and healthy snacks to keep in the fridge.
Microwave– Good for making quick breakfasts, or microwaveable popcorn for movie night with friends.
Coffee Maker
Coffee
Dry Goods– Pack healthy snacks to bring with you to class for a mid-afternoon energy boost. Try: peanuts, granola bars, or dried fruit.
Microwaveable Dinners-Easy to make meals are always good after a long day at class. Best used as a last resort, when you don’t feel like making anything else.
Microwaveable Popcorn– Movie nights will happen more often than you think.
Utensils– Knives, forks, and spoons, plus whatever else you think you might need for preparing meals in your room.
Bowls/Plates– This is usually the thing everybody forgets to bring, but everybody needs.

Twin Sheets– Double check the size, but most colleges have twin/extra large twin beds. Always bring an extra set of sheets and pillowcases. College students like to avoid doing laundry as long as possible.
Mattress Topper– The beds provided are not very soft, so this will come in handy.
Pillows/Pillowcases– Tempurpedic pillows are a glorious option. It will feel like your sleeping on a cloud filled with happiness.
Comforter

STUDY:

Organizers– Shoe racks to organize your shoes, hangers for the dresser, and folders and files for your desk. Not many college students are organized. It helps to start off organized to get you on the right track with your studies. Plus, it’s much harder to organize mid-semester.
Folders/Binders/Notebooks– College is less strict compared to high school. They don’t care how you organize, as long as you hand in the work on time. Find what method works best for you and stick to it. Dedicate a notebook for each class.
Index Cards– They will come in handy for study groups, and when it comes time for midterms/finals.
Tape/Push Pins– For hanging up posters on your wall and tacking memos to your cork board. Check that your dorm doesn’t have any rules against hanging things on the walls before you do it.

Make a list two weeks before you need to start packing. Before move in day, you will feel a lot of emotions. You may be stressed or too excited, and end up forgetting something important. Check off the things as you pack them. Remember to bring anything with you that will make your new room feel comfortable, like home to you.
