The new resort line of Chanel debuted in Dubai where some received the collection while others were not too pleased with certain details. The middle eastern market is an untapped market and it’s a shame. Karl Lagerfield decided to take advantage of this opportunity and show off his new line which absorbs local tradition and fuses it with Classic Chanel. Lagerfeld took references from Paul Pottier Orientalism and Marisa Benson slash Veruscka’s hippie style. Trending carefully, Lagerfeld debuted a line that was sharia friendly and modern, using red and white checkered dishdashas, Islamic title and floral lame fused with Chanel floral. The scene also infused Middle East and Chanel, traditional Moorish design that actually was embedded Chanel logos which surrounded a man made island and was decorated with plastic palm trees. Lagerfeld described his line as romantic and modern orient. The audience included local potentates, princesses, celebrity’s: Tilda Swinton, Vanessa Paradise, Janelle Monae, and Sandra Koop. The favorite look of the evening was the caramel crepe tunic worn by Joan Smalls. So what went wrong? Lagerfeld said he was careful not to be super cliche and offend people. Well, he dropped the ball when he debuted a gold quilted oil can purse to pay homage to Dubai’s oil economy. Come on Karl, what was the thought process. Tacky yes but will people be mad for long, probably not since even the most pissed off guest, were contemplating in buying some designs for their store. I mean it’s Chanel.
