As votes rolled in for Hillary Clinton to becomes the official Democratic nominee on Tuesday, her daughter Chelsea took some time to sit down with a crowd of over 100 women at a joint Glamour and Facebook event in the Wells Fargo center.
Glamour’s editor-in-chief, Cindi Leive, interviewed Chelsea along with longtime Clinton supporters Lena Dunham and America Ferrera. Chelsea donned a capped sleeved blue floral dress and classic nude pumps, while ‘Girls’ actress and co-creator, Dunham opted for a navy blue lace dress. And in true politically minded fashion, Ferrera sported a ‘Hillary for President’ tee tucked into a sleek black pencil skirt.
The three women weren’t just there to display their expert fashion sense, they also expressed their political views on the current Democratic National Convention.
And it wouldn’t be a true interview if Republican nominee, Donald Trump, wasn’t mentioned. Chelsea Clinton commented on the matter, “Republicans know they’re not ready for a debate or conversation about what our most pressing challenges are.” This statement echoes President Obama’s speech late last night when he stated that Trump was a man “who confused bluster with strength.”
Chelsea even admitted the urge to ask her longtime friend, Ivanka Trump, how she envisions her father keeping the bombastic promises he doles out on the election stage. She states in contrast that her mother “has consistently said how she’s going to do things . . . And how she’s going to pay for it.”
As Leive questioned Chelsea on Trump’s social media rampage of Hillary Clinton’s character, as he time and again calls the Democratic nominee ‘Crooke Hillary,’ Lena Dunham stepped in.
Invalidating Trump’s character critique’s, Dunham said, “Well, he’s already called me a B-lister with no mojo. So what’s coming next?”
Chelsea chimed in once more to add the now famed phrase from Michelle Obama’s DNC speech, “When they go low, we go high.”
America Ferrera jokingly added, “[Trump has] talked a lot about America. He keeps trying to make me great again. I don’t know why. I’ve been pretty great for years now.” And then on a more sober note, “No, luckily I haven’t been the target of any of his tweets.”
Ferrera has been a longtime supporter of Clinton’s campaign, even dating back to her election run in 2008 against Obama. So, she sympathizes with Bernie Sanders ralliers who still want to feel the bern. Reminiscing on the disappointment of Clinton’s own defeat eight years ago, Ferrera said, “I remember that feeling.” Quickly adding, but “we can’t afford the alternative,” in reference to Trump’s Republican nomination.
Each woman then commented on Clinton’s groundbreaking strides for women nationwide:
“We’re not only so lucky to be facing this moment when a woman can be a candidate for President of the United States, we’re so lucky that it is this woman,” Dunham stated.
While Ferrera concurred, “None of us have to be the first again. Now our daughters will never know or have to know why that’s a special thing.”
And to the tune of resounding cheers, Chelsea Clinton marveled at the country’s future if under her mother’s wing: “My mother will have broken down this barrier and I hope in November breaks through the hardest, highest glass ceiling in this country.”
After concluding the interview, guests watched a live performance by the Syncopated Ladies, all dressed in Hillary-approved pantsuits – singing Beyoncé’s ‘Run the World (Girls)’ anthem.
