Lifetime has officially announced that their hit drama show Devious Maids will not be renewed for their fifth season. Devious Maids, which was a part of Lifetime’s summer series, will now have its fourth season’s finale or the show’s 49th episode that aired last month to be the show’s conclusion.
Devious Maids was known as one of the most diverse shows from ABC Studio’s production that was also credited as one of the first all-Latina ensemble on any English-speaking network. The show was Lifetime’s long running established series in the last few years and also helped launch more scripted shows, like UnReal for the network.
Devious Maids storyline is about four close Hispanic friends played by Ana Ortiz (Marisol), Dania Ramírez (Rosie), Roselyn Sánchez (Carmen), and Judy Reyes (Zoila). The four woman found ways to bond together during stressful times while at work and also in real life. Although the main character’s lives are constantly tangled with some of their employer’s personal drama’s, which has given some of Devious Maids fans a few good laughs in the last four years.
The originally produced by ABC studios series was created by Marc Cherry, who is known for his work on Desperate Housewives. One of the main show executives is actress Eva Longoria from Desperate Housewives. Other producers include Sabrina Wind, Curtis Kheel, Larry Shuman, David Lonner, John Mass, Brian Tanen, Michael Garcia, and lastly Televisa USA production company’s Paul Presburger.
Lifetime has reportedly hinted Devious Maids was cancelled because of low viewership numbers every year since its launch in 2013. Another rumored theory is that the network wanted to focus on rebranding their scripted series due to UnReal’s major success. Since UnReal premiered on Lifetime in 2015, they show has gained three Emmy nominations and also won a few AFI and Peabody awards.
Lifetime also reportedly has two scripted series that are being under review for a series pickup called “Sea of Change” and an anthology series “A Midsummer’s Nightmare”.
Even though Devious Maids has never won any major movie awards, the show will be missed by its longtime fans.
