Dior Cruise 2019 Took Inspiration From Escaramuzas

The Dior Cruise 2019 show took place a few days ago, and it really was a show.

Maria Grazia Chiuri, Italian fashion designer and artistic director of Dior, was inspired by the escaramuzas of Mexico. Escaramuza is a Mexican female sport, similar to the American rodeo, that emphasizes female strength and beauty. It consists of women mounted on horseback, often dressed in full skirts, bright colors, and big hats. Chiuri incorporated these elements into her designs, which included vibrant colors, lots of embellishment, and detailed embroidery.

The show took place at an equestrian facility in Chantilly just outside of Paris, and Chiuri invited real escaramuzas to kick it off. The women rode out on their horses, in dresses made specifically for them by Chiuri. Their outfits were inspired by the embroidered linens of hope chests. Chiuri wanted to create looks with a lot of embroidery and stitching, which are a female tradition for the escaramuzas’ uniform.

Right before the start of the show, a heavy rainstorm broke out, soaking the models and their outfits. Although the rain was an unexpected surprise, it made for some gorgeous photos.

Models walked through the rain wearing full riding skirts with embroidered motifs, printed skirts, flared skirts, Adelita-inspired dresses, tiered dresses, leather riding boots and hats, sombreros, wide leather belts, saddle bags, florals, prints, lace, and ruffles.

The detailed embroidery on high-neck blouses and long, belted dresses felt very haute couture. Jackets and pants were printed with images of lions, monkeys, and snakes, which added character and liveliness to the pieces. Dior Cruise 2019 will be a collection to remember.
