Disney X Coach: A Dark Fairy Tale Collection

Stuart Vevers, creative director of the luxury brand Coach has re-imagined your favorite Disney princesses to create a Goth- and grunge-inspired range of products for men and women

According to a 2018 LA Times report, Coach’s pre-fall 2018 offerings included, the collection, which was available globally on May 14, includes jersey hoodies, sneakers, fanny packs, jackets and bags in motifs — and with statement patches — such as poisonous apples (a la “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”), cartoon bluebirds and sinister fairy-tale staples such as spooky eyes and creepy skulls.

According to a 2018 Elle report, Elle asked Vevers about his design process and what it was like to achieve the final product.

“Because this is our third collection we’ve done with Disney, they know us well, and we’ve also got to know how they work. It was really important to me that I give something that felt fashion. Even when we did Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse earlier this year with Disney, I always wanted it to have something that felt very different, very unique.”

Vevers added, “When I first approached Disney [with the idea for A Dark Fairy Tale], I wasn’t sure they would want to play up the dark side of these movies—but they were really into the idea. The also felt it was fresh and new, and they know we’re going to approach it in a respectful and elevated way.”

In a statement he made on behalf of the collection, Vevers said the fantasy worlds conjured by Disney have “captured my imagination for many decades. It was fun to explore the darker side of these stories and mix Disney’s nostalgic charm with Coach’s creativity to bring my memories from these fairy tales to life within our world of accessories and ready-to-wear.”

Prices range from $20 for a Dwarf sticker to $1,200 for a leather racer jacket.

At first when reading this article I wasn’t so sure on what I thought about the idea. However, once I continued reading the article it was explained, how the idea came to mind. The purpose was to create something more unique, since this is their 3rd year working with Disney. After I read that statement I thought it was such a fantastic idea, so creative, and made me definitely excited and want to see these pieces even more.
