Dove has started something called the ‘Self Esteem Project’ in the hopes of reaching millions of women and girls by promoting confidence and self-love. Their website says, “At Dove, we have a vision of a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety. Our mission is to ensure the next generation grow up enjoying a positive relationship with the way they look – helping girls to raise their self-esteem and realize their full potential.” It is much easier to start a body positive movement with a younger generation because their minds are a bit more malleable, and their way of thinking can be easily shaped. If you start telling them that they are beautiful the way that they are at an earlier age, the more it will sink in.
Dove possess great questions to support the reasoning behind their project and say, “Did you know that 6 out of 10 girls are so concerned with the way they look that they opt out of important activities?” They go on to say that, “From playing sports and swimming to visiting the doctor, going to school or just offering an opinion, anxiety about their looks can keep girls from living life to the full. It’s clear something needs to be done and that’s where we can help.” No one, especially a child, should feel so shy about the way that they look that they cannot bring themselves to participate in everyday activities. People need to be able to be themselves or they end up living their entire life under a rock.
Dove also says in regards to their ‘Self Esteem Project’ that, “Together with leading experts from fields including psychology, health, and body image, we’ve created a program of world-class resources, many of which have been scientifically proven to significantly develop and increase body confidence and self-esteem in young people.”
Dove added that, “In the 11 years since we launched the Dove Self-Esteem Project, more than 625,000 teachers have delivered a Dove self-esteem workshop and more than 1.5 million parents have engaged with our online content.” It is good that they are implementing valuable resources such as experts in psychology. This will optimize their ability to effectively reach women and girls by providing what they need to see in commercials. Representation in media plays a huge part in young girls’ self-esteem. Younger minds have more of a difficulty not seeing themselves, their body type, their skin color, their disability, and their age shown in the media. Many times, children will perceive this lack of diversity as a form of exclusion and believe that there are not many people like them, or that the look is not pretty enough to be shown, which is completely untrue.
Dove also talked about what they have already accomplished and said, “We’ve already helped 19.4 million young people in 138 countries. But we won’t stop there. Our global mission is to reach 20 million more by 2020. Raising the self-esteem of the next generation is a vital part of this change, but we can’t do it alone.” They continued and said that, “With your help, we can connect with the lives of even more young people. So whether you’re a parent, a mentor, or a friend, you’ll find everything you need to support the girls in your life on our Self-Esteem Hub.” They also state that, “We’re on a mission to help the next generation of women realize their full potential.”
Dove’s focus on the beauty of diversity is something that all of us can jump on board with. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, and acceptance is going to be the latest trend set by such an inspiring company.
