Oscars-Ellen-white-tuxWith so many memorable films of 2013, movie buffs are forced to wait till March of the following year to see if the movies that stole their hearts, stole the hearts of the rest of the world as well. This year’s Oscars were no different. Oscar Sunday held on March 2nd 2014 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles brought out all of the stars and those who have captured us emotionally through film. Ellen DeGeneres hosted this year and was hilarious from her monologue till the end. Some memorable moments were her selfie with Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, and so many others which made Twitter history with the most retweets. Another was when she ordered pizza for the celebrities in the audience and distributed slices, and then used Pharell’s infamous hat as a collection plate for the pizza. These are just a few moments; the list goes on and on. There were also many memorable performances such as Bette Midler’s

performance of “Wind beneath My Wings”, Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go”, and Pink’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” tribute to the Wizard of Oz, but I’m sure the most talked about performance will be Pharell’s performance of “Happy”. While performing Pharell went into the audience and had Lupita Nyong’o, Meryl Streep, and Amy Adams dance with him, Jamie Foxx and his daughter also joined him on stage along with many others. It was certainly a performance that made many happy!
Pharrell-performanceLike every Oscar’s before it, I’m sure that the reactions to the winners at the 86th Academy awards are split. There are many who have been nominated several times and still did not win, but there are also the newcomers who defied the odds. The newcomer I speak of is Lupita Nyong’o. It was as if the whole world held their breath as the nominees for Best Supporting Actress were called. Lupita Nyong’o walked away with the Oscar for her performance in “12 Years a Slave” just one day after her birthday, what a gift! There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as the joy that Lupita had was felt through all of our television screens. Gravity swept the show with wins in Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Editing, Cinematography, Editing, Original Score, and Best Director. Although many hoped for Leo to finally get his own, many felt it was Matthew McConaughey’s turn, and it was. McConaughey won an Oscar for his performance in “Dallas Buyers Club” and gave a memorable speech where he thanked and praised God. And the win Best Actress was Cate Blanchett’s performance in “Blue Jasmine” despite the issues currently surrounding Woody Allen. And to end the show, the film that produced Academy award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” wins Best Picture! There were so many honored for the amazing work that they have done this past year. Hope you didn’t miss it! But if you did here is the list of winners!
