The Character of Hermoine Granger is now lending her voice and her ideas to the UN, as a newly appointed Women Goodwill Ambassador for Human rights!

The event, hosted by Wolf Blitzer, was presented to created a greater awareness for gender equality. Watson’s speech touched upon the creation and her involvement with Hefoshe, heforshe.org. Heforshe is a solidarity movement about raising awareness for men who speak out against women rights and vice versa;

“Now it’s time to unify our efforts. HeForShe is a solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one half of humanity in support of the other of humanity, for the entirety of humanity. “

Since she was appointed as Ambassador six months ago she has spoken about feminism and women rights. Albeit issues that are close to her heart; Her speech was full of passion and honesty. She touches on a very important issue within human right’s. Gender rights and human rights have been closely linked to women, but what about the men and boys?

Here is a snippet of her speech:

“We don’t want to talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that they are. When they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence. If men don’t have to be aggressive, women won’t be compelled to be submissive. If men don’t need to control, women won’t have to be controlled.”

She smartly began her speech by touching on her personal experiences growing and being labeled as “Bossy”, at age 8. Later talking about how at a certain age girls turned against sports because they didn’t want to be seen as overly “masculine”. She admits that she was confused about these so called gender roles from a young age. Her speech was a call to action; Men deal with shame and are encouraged not to express their emotions from a young age. This, she said is part of the entire issue.
