Emma Watson Quizzes Designers on Gender Equality

Last year Emma Watson help launch the HeForShe Campaign for gender equality during her speech at the United Nations as the Women Goodwill Ambassador. In her speech to the UN she stated,

“I think it is right that as a woman I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decision-making of my country. I think it is right that socially I am afforded the same respect as men. But sadly I can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights.”

Watson recently led a discussion on the topic with some top fashion designers on how they felt about the subject of gender equality and released it side by side her stunning British Vogue cover.

Designers include Stella McCartney, Bella Freud, Jonathan Saunders and Erdem Moralioglu and are all thinking about Watson’s questions, which cover the challenges for women in the fashion industry, what part the fashion industry can play in gender equality, and their “hopes and dreams” for gender equality.

Every designer asked the question, “Are you a feminist?” replied with a positive “yes” response.

McCartney argues that the fashion industry needs “to give a better message to women of all ages, all sizes and all nationalities. We need to allow women to feel comfortable with who they are,” she says.

Freud comments that equality between men and women “is about fair pay, about equal pay,” and that there should be “maternity leave for men as well as women.”
