On August 25, 2014, the Emmy awards will be announced for the world to hear. This year the usual suspects topped the charts, with big names like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones being two of the most popular. However, the emergence of Netflix binge shows like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards made two significant dents in the Comedy and Drama categories, respectively. Game of Thrones will carry 19 nominations, including Best Drama Series, with Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey both receiving nominations of their own.
Laverne Cox will have the opportunity to be the first transgender person ever to be nominated for an Emmy. Cox was nominated for a Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black.
Girls, a show so well received in the past, has been removed from the Best Comedy list this year, although Lena Dunham and Adam Driver both were given Emmy nominations. Dunham received one for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Driver for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
This year, the Emmy’s appear to have grown immensely in terms of diversity, with Cox being a highlight. As diversity in television becomes more and more of a priority, shows like Orange is the New Black become better recognized for their innovation and attention to cultural shifts.
