What Every College Senior Should Know Before Graduating

In a couple of weeks you’ll be walking across the stage with a diploma in your hand. The thought of living as an adult in the real world is probably a hard pill to swallow for some but all good things must come to an end. As intimidating as the world may seem it’s filled with promising opportunities. You may not see that now because of all the work you have to do, but your big break is right around the corner. Having this sort of optimism is essential because this world has the capability of breaking people, but you don’t have to be one of them.

If your post-graduation plans didn’t work out please know that it’s not the end of the world. The fact that you stuck through four years of college and did well enough to receive your diploma is a major accomplishment that you should be proud of. Try your best not be discouraged because your time will come. Also, during those moments of uncertainty it’s important to know that your dreams still matter. Your dreams are just as important as they were when you first discovered them so don’t give up. Sadly there will be moments when your dreams will be all you have to account for, but hopefully you’ll use that time to refine your skills, network with the right people and truly go after what you’ve always wanted. Remember that no one will fight for your dreams but you. If you remain stagnant, ruminating on the fact that you haven’t reached the same level of success as most of your peers, you’ll never know what you’re capable of achieving.

You don’t need to know what you want to do for the rest of your life as soon as you turn your tassel. There are many people that believe otherwise, but you should move at your own pace. Find out what you truly love and pursue it. People might try to influence you to change career paths, but as Henry David Thoreau stated, “go confidently in the direction of your dreams.” There’s no need to stress out about how long you’re taking to achieve your end goal. What matters most is that you’re working hard to ensure that you get exactly what you want. Don’t settle for anything less than what you deserve because you’ve come so far. What’s the point of turning back now?
