Fall Out of Summer: Transition Your Style for Those Tricky Days In-Between

We’ve all been there. The last few days of summer are rearing their ugly, sweaty head, and, before you know it, September is here—and all your favorite stores are sporting winter coats and mohair sweaters in their window displays. Though it’s still sarong-worthy weather, your coeds and/or colleagues may think less of you if you waltz in one day wearing that beach-y sundress you lived in for the past three months. So how do you dress when that brisk morning walk to work is met with a mid-afternoon heat wave? The solution to this fashion query can be easily answered in one word: layers.

No, that doesn’t mean you need to pull a Peter Parker and change outfits mid-stride (though it would be quite entertaining for those unsuspecting passersby). A simple, lightweight cardigan  in a neutral camel hue can be a lifesaver during these climate-clashing times.

Try pairing it with a sheer blouse and trousers for an outfit that can withstand any temperature or circumstance.

Or, for the weekends that you hit the ground running, a boyfriend-style cardigan can make any jeans-and-tee coupling a bit more edgy, and climate-conscious.

Tights can autumnize the ethereal dresses and floaty skirts you’re not yet ready to depart with, but stay away from any wacky, childish prints (if sheer nude and black hose can work for Kate Middleton, then it can work for you). Slipping on a classic button-down underneath a short-sleeved top can help combat the cold-morning-syndrome—and is breathable enough for all-day wear—associated with this mercurial time of year.

Shift dresses in simple colors and fabrics—like jersey—can work virtually all-year-round.

Get playful with your accessories to anchor the dress to suit whatever look you need. For example, a bright clutch and sandals for those summerish days, or layer delicate jewelry with tights, booties, and a light bomber jacket for when fall finally comes around.

Dark-hued accessories and fall-ready tops can prolong the life of your white pants—but make sure that they look more winter white than bright white (yes, you can tell the difference—think Andy’s winter-ready white coat-and-hat ensemble in The Devil Wears Prada, not the White-Out floating around at the bottom of your office junk-drawer).

Don’t be afraid to get the most out of your airy summer staples—even after the beaches close.
