Fashion Forward Gets A Makeover with Pinterest’s Lens Virtual Search

While ordering a cheesy pizza or some greasy Chinese food has been just a few clicks away for years, the internet has taken longer to evolve in the fashion sense. However, with Pinterest’s new visual search program called Lens, the newest update will advance fashion technology even further. Introduced earlier this year, Pinterest is taking a huge step forward with this program, changing it from a simple social network to a budding digital advertising outlet. The new Lens feature will be a search engine for the world around us, allowing us to identify products and objects in real world or picture.

Pinterest suggests users will be able to take pictures of clothing, shoes, or accessories in their closets, then Lens will return with outfit ideas, styles, and ways to mix and match the garments that people already own. Another addition to the program allows users to select the capture button and discover related objects and ideas to the item photograph. While some may think this is a waste of time, to retailers, advertisers, and fashionistas, this is a goldmine. In an announcement Wednesday, Pinterest emphasized their newest increase in funding and stated their newest funds will be directed towards advanced computer vision and visual search technologies while continuing to develop Lens further.

As of April 2017, Pinterest had kept 175 million monthly active users with more than 100 billion “ideas” pinned on boards in the platform, 75% of which Pinterest derives direct business. However, Pinterest is in competition with Amazon, which debuted Echo Look in April. In Amazon’s program, a voice assistant called Alexa and a new service called Style Check compare two photos simultaneously of what the user is wearing. Ultimately, Style Check will tell the user which outfit looks better through algorithms that review the fit, color, and styling of the outfit. Whichever method one chooses, these virtual stylists are changing the game of fashion.

A coffee depended life-form who enjoys thriller novels, creative writing, and wearing heels to feel taller. Shy to acquaintances, presumably obnoxious to friends. Watched the Harry Potter saga more times than I should admit, but then I remember: who cares? Thoroughly enjoy getting dressed up, but love my fuzzy sweatpants. I like to think my life is interesting.
