It’s natural to associate certain styles with different times of the year. For example, there is the infamous no-white-after-labor-day rule. Or perhaps the idea that jewel tones and rich neutrals are strictly meant for autumn and winter? However we really feel about these arbitrary norms, one must admit that there are simply some things that are inseparable from certain times of the year.
In this case, it’s a certain print that is so stereotypically summer: No, not florals. But fruit prints.
This summer is seeing a huge surge in fruit prints, whether it’s on dresses, rompers, clutches etc. These produce inspired sartorial choices seem to be channeling the tropics; or at the very least, what you might consider eating under such humid conditions. Examples of this print include the HVN Cherry Dress, Alutzurra sandals embellished with bananas, and even some editions from Prada.

The look is certainly not new to the fashion world. People have been wearing fruit prints for as long as they’ve even been wearing prints. 18th-century aristocrats could be seen in waistcoats bedecked with berries. Flash forward to the 20th century, and we’re quick to think of the toque hat of bacchanal grapes designed by Ella Schiaparelli in 1939.

This cheerful trend seems extremely summer appropriate. Amidst at a time of political tension and concern over a multitude of social issues, this quirky, somewhat childlike print is an interesting choice for the fashion world. It is perhaps what some might view as at least one lighthearted feature of current times.

I can’t say I’m into fruit prints this summer but I’ve always preferred florals
