Kitten heels are—in many ways—the compromise of the footwear industry. They provide a hint of height for the petite ladies of the world (represent), without causing the back-breaking (and sole-crushing) pain of a pair of six-inchers. Plus, they basically feel like ballet flats, but look much more sophisticated at work and at parties. Kitten heels could solve so many of the world’s (sartorial, and probably podiatric) problems, but yet some women—mainly younger ladies—seem to think that kitten heels are too “old” or “aging” (you didn’t hear it from me). Well, I am here to tell you that you are WRONG! Kitten heels are the little chic shoe you never considered getting, but actually really need.

Reasons why kitten heels are great: dates that you want to look nice on but not cry alone in your room from the blisters that formed, days at work that you just don’t feel like wearing the fancy heels to the boring morning meeting (no matter how badly your outfit needs them), weekend outings where your shoes are the make or break factor, and (yes, I’m saying it again) blisters! And with pairs as cute as these chic Silence + Noise ones from Urban Outfitters, the possibilities are endless.

Michael Kors’ Arabella Kitten Heels are crazy modern with their chunky heel and studded style (so you’ll feel anything but elderly).

The dual ankle strap and croco pattern on this pair of French Connection kitten heels brings the classic (some think as dowdy) kitten heel a fresh 2014 twist.

Even Topshop has jumped on the kitten bandwagon with their studded Jitter heels. We think even high-heel hell-raiser Kate Moss would wear these puppies (or should we say kitties? No, you’re right, that’s weird).

So please, please, please, give your feet a break and try out a pair of kitten heels! They’re not as old-lady as you’d think—they can actually look really youthful if you wear them right (no tweed suits, that’s a little too old-school). Trust us, you need a pair.
