The Webby Awards are the Oscars for the internet. These awards are used for, “honoring excellence on the Internet.”
YouTube personality Grace Helbig is no stranger to the internet. She has been creating videos on the internet for over 5 years, and just over four months ago she started her new channel “It’sGrace”. Her new channel is already over 1.7 million subscribers. Helbig’s YouTube channel features herself reviewing movies, talking about celebrity news, clothing hauls, and how to’s.
At the 18th Webby Awards, Grace Helbig won the First Person Series in the Webby’s People Voice Award category. The awards under this title are chosen by an online poll. The First Person award is given to someone who performs on camera using one character, and talks directly to the camera and the people watching. The winners were announced on April 28th, but the actual awards were held yesterday.
Helbig went to the stage to accept her awards, and presented the audience with a moving 5-word speech, “to quote my favorite song.” This was used to parody people accepting awards who use well known literature to express how they are feeling.
Helbig used the attention that her award gained her to officially announce in her daily video that she wrote a book called Grace’s Guide Book, The Art of Pretending to be a Grown-up. Fans of her channel are encouraged to pre-order the book, which comes out in October 2014.
