Just imagine Ryan Gosling and Channing Tatum exchanging looks of “wow, what the hell was that? Did a piece of me just die?”. That might be the scenario for a lot of viewers who took in the new release by Nicole Kidman. It’s a tradition at Cannes to kick off their international film festival with something to get the party going. Not a lethargic film about a Hollywood actress turned princess with a sloppy story line and terrible acting. The plus to the film was that it was not as long as Diana, another lackluster film. Btw, Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts are buddies so maybe bombing movies is what they have in common.

But it takes two to tango and in a film there are plenty of dancers making muck. The story begins with Hitchcock going to Monaco to get Grace Kelly back into films and proposes that she consider two of his projects. Kelly declines leaving Hitchcock heartbroken. Afterwards, Kelly is racked with uncertainty about her decision. Meanwhile she is trying to get the ladies of Monaco to like her so she does her best to dress pretty and join charity events. She then has to battle evils of Charles De Gualiere who wants to absorb the principality into France and reap the taxes from the people of Monaco for the state coffers. Her “courage” is seen when she tirelessly protects Monaco for horrible billionaires. Then there is Nicole Kidman, who critics say gave a ‘wooden performance’, so wooden some feared a fire would begin to blaze. Whoops, there goes an Oscar nod. Bummer! Honestly, we have always thought of Nicole Kidman as this detached women who despises all things yucky, she being the example of type A, so I was not surprised that her impression of Grace Kelly would come off as stale. Some have said the movie is more of a 102 minute Chanel ad with less depth, oh snap. Oh well, maybe they should not do a movie on every famous person. Would you pay money to see a biopic on Kim Kardashian? Yeah, we thought so.
