While social networking is all well and good for boring Tuesday nights, when you look at the clock and realize you’ve spent a solid two hours stalking that girl from high school with never ending beach waves, there’s a problem. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and whatever else you use to keep connected all perpetuate FOMO, or Fear Of Missing Out. FOMO makes you do crazy things, like deciding to text your ex at 1:00 AM, or dyeing your hair blue because the color looked great on your friend from college. It makes you feel like you don’t have friends, even though the pictures you’re poring over probably don’t depict what’s actually happening at all. Starting a strict diet of no social networking may be just the thing you need to boost your confidence. Here is a list of things to do when you feel compelled to go on a social networking rampage.
- Buzzfeed: the perfect cure-all for when you’re in front of the computer. Buzzfeed is just as addictive as Facebook, but you get to look at funny GIFs instead of feeling depressed.
- Go online shopping. Get distracted by how great you’ll look in a new pair of shoes, or a new shirt. Don’t go overboard and binge-buy all of Topshop, but treat yourself!
- Go and actually see a friend. You have friends! Interact with them!
- Do your make-up just to stay in.
- Watch a movie.
- Watch all of House of Cards.
- Call your family.
- Bake cupcakes.
- Look at endless pictures of Andrew Garfield.
- Go for a run…or a walk.
- Dance. Dance to Beyoncé.
