You can’t really mention Gucci and Dapper Dan in the same sentence without really referencing back to some of their history. Dapper Dan, whose brand made a name for itself in the 1980s, is often credited as being the godfather of Hip Hop fashion. Some would argue that he was one of the earliest proponents of streetwear.
Dapper was once accused by Gucci for stealing the Italian fashion house’s logo. But then, Gucci got accused of stealing one of Dapper’s designs.
After enough conflict to make anyone’s head spin, the Italian fashion label and the Harlem-based couturier have decided to bury the hatchet and are launching an official collaboration. Dapper Dan commented on this new development, stating “Everyone paid homage to Dapper Dan, but no one ever paid him. The people have spoken and Gucci has listened. Nothing has been more significant in the Harlem cultural scene than Alessandro and Gucci coming to Harlem and partnering with Dapper Dan.”

As mentioned before, Dapper Dan has a huge reputation as an icon of 80s Hip Hop culture. Their designs have been worn by the likes of Salt and Peppa, Run DMC, and even Mike Tyson. As such, this collaboration will be a capsule collection, and will largely be reminiscent of Dapper’s designs from the period; including many pieces from footwear, glasses, bags etc. The entire collection is currently available online right now.
