Hair Hacks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

Ah, hair. Some days it’s on fleek, others (like, say, 6.5 out of 7) it’s a visible catastrophe that we never truly get rid of. From our pre-K years of ballerina buns and ponytails (and probably too-short bangs thrown somewhere in there), to the painstaking years of adolescent experimentation (we’re talking to you, younger self with the too-chunky highlights), our hair is constantly transforming to fit our style, personality, and schedule of the current moment (five minutes to get ready in the morning? Hello two-second topknot). So here are a few hair hacks that you will for sure be thanking us for later (it’s no biggy, honest).

Don’t Use A Towel To Dry Your Hair: You may be thinking: “What does she expect me to do, stick my head out the window?,” and while I understand the sarcastic overtones, I do not understand how women are still towel-drying their hair. The friction from the vigorous hair-drying and material of any regular old bath towel wreaks havoc on your hair—and you don’t even know it. All of that unnecessary strain on your strands equals frizz, poofiness, and—worst of all—breakage. So please, please, please opt instead for an old, cotton t-shirt. Gently squeeze the water out of your hair—DO NOT rub it haphazardly through your hair, it defeats the purpose.

Fight Frizz With Your Toothbrush: Yup, you read that right. A toothbrush (preferably not the one that you use for your teeth), when paired with hairspray, is one of the best frizz-eliminators around. It attacks stubborn flyaways without dousing your entire head in a cloud of Tresemme (no offense). Plus, your hair will look naturally flawless—as if the idea of hairspray just isn’t in your beauty vocabulary (in that case, well done).

Don’t Use The Clamp On Your Curling Iron: For natural, bouncy curls/waves, do not use the clamp on your curling iron. Instead, just wrap your hair around the entire iron—starting from the middle of the hair shaft. This will ensure that your curls stay put longer, and that you look more I woke up like this, rather than I could pass as an unsightly baby beauty pageant contestant (harsh—maybe. But it had to be said). Conair’s Infiniti You Curl doesn’t even have a clamp, so if you find that your old iron is too tempting, maybe you should consider this one instead.

Use Dry Shampoo At Night Instead Of In The Morning: By now, we have all bowed down to the wondrous ways of dry shampoo (whatever saves me from washing my hair is cool with me). It sops up excess root oil, makes your styles last longer, and amps up the volume. So instead of using your dry shampoo (we like Psssst!, $5.99 at Ulta) in the morning when you wake up, try applying it at night. The product will sort of soak into your hair overnight, ensuring that you wake up with flawless-looking hair.
