At the Diamond Ball in Los Angeles, bad gal RiRi herself sported a long, lustrous, GRAY ponytail—and it was awesome. Though other celebrities have gone gray before (Kylie Jenner, Kelly Osbourne, and Zosia Mamet just to name a few), Rihanna worked it in a way like they just could not pull off.

Maybe that’s because she’s Rihanna, or maybe that’s because she was clad in skintight, marsala-colored satin (Color of the Year alert!) care of Zac Posen. Or, maybe it was that she sported a HUGE, Elizabeth-Taylor-approved gem around her neck (seriously though, you could ice skate on that thing), but I digress.

What matters most here is that gray hair, typically something women dye, conceal, and—ironically lose their hair over—can look chic. If you’re still lucky enough to be free of silver strands, start out small (like RiRi and Kylie Jenner) and got for the ombre look. You won’t feel as old or crazy as if you would if you dyed your entire head; instead you’ll feel trendy and oh-so-Rihanna.

Women have ignored the possibilities for so long, but the future of hair is here, and—thanks to Rihanna—it looks pretty gray.
