H&M’s 50s Inspired Collection, Retro Fabulous or Outdated?

With Fall fashion approaching, it makes sense that many brands are now releasing collections. A fact which causes much excitement amongst the fashion aware, as they are our first glimpse at upcoming trends. One brand, in particular, is H&M. The Swedish fast-fashion label has made many headlines recently for various reasons, such as changing the range of their sizing to discontinuing the practice of photoshopping models on their swimsuit ads.

The inspiration this time around? Well, recent years have seen revivals of the 70s and 90s. H&M has mentioned drawing inspiration from the latter as well as the 80s in this collection, but the most notable influence in the 1950s. The brand has said that it particularly drew inspiration from the series Twin Peaks, which is set in the decade.

The collection largely consists of pieces reminiscent of icons such as Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. This is especially apparent in pieces such as fuzzy dressy sweaters, western style boots, and cuffed jeans.

Concept designer Angela Grimborg has commented on the influence of Twin Peaks: “From Donna Hayword’s cozy alpine sweaters to Audrey Horne’s body sculpting dresses, to the Log Lady’s eccentric log accessories which appear as a pattern on a slouchy suit, there was lots in our mood board to inspire. I’d like to see Donna in one of our knits.”
