Without trying, I stumbled upon this tiny, easily overlooked, restaurant when strolling through the East Village. I was searching for a place to eat on a random Wednesday night and it did not disappoint. Not knowing what to expect, The Black Ant — aka La Hormiga Negra — is an interesting, modern Mexican spot for daring diners. More than just your trite trendy taco joint, The Black Ant boasts dishes like fried nopal cactus, guacamole doused in crushed up ants and shrimp tacos with grasshopper.

While it may sound revolting or inedible, it is actually really good. I swear.

The dinner menu hosts a variety of unique and tasty options, including both an entire farm and sea of options—blood clams, shrimp tacos, black sea bass, goat, duck, roasted pig – you name the farm animal, they likely have it doused in some surprisingly tasty and unfrightening insect with some even tastier Mexican spices.

The atmosphere is trendy, with its dimly lit bar, which happens to be made up of tiles painted with ants  and dark wood tables, yet is surprisingly comfortable.

For nights when you’re feeling bold, check out this fun Mexican cuisine. Rumor has it they will be starting brunch on weekends at 11 am, so be sure to check out what is expected to be a fun mid-morning menu as well.
