After months of waiting, fans of “American Horror Story” have something to talk about. The first set of teasers has been released via Snapchat, but no official theme has been mentioned. Thus, the speculation begins. The teasers, as usual are creepy and subtle, as is to be expected from the series. The strongest speculation so far has many fans leaning towards “cult” as a theme; let’s look at the teasers and see what can be found.
“Lullaby”: features what seems like a throwback to season one, with a baby’s crib shrouded in curtains. A mobile of sharp, old-fashioned farming implements (along with the symbol for season 6) hangs from the top. A hand shoots out of the crib, looking grotesque, green, and clawed as it grasps a knife.
Speculations: Many fans have pointed to the Antichrist child from season 1, looking at possible references to “Rosemary’s Baby,” which features both a demon baby and a Satanic Cult. The hand itself looks more like Thaddeus, also from Season 1.
“Descent”: A woman runs down a dark staircase while hands grab at her ankles. When she reaches the bottom, one grabs her and she begins to scream as the teaser fades to the next segment.
Speculations: Some speculate that the teaser indicates a woman being held captive. But it is also highly reminiscent of those classic horror movie scenes where the heroine goes alone into the dark basement. The hands could be either living, dead, or something in-between. A closer look reveals that the hands appear to be burning, ember-like. Some have guessed that they are the hands of the damned, tying again into the Satanic speculation. Or, you know, the spirits of burned victims. Either way, it’s creepy.
“Milli Crossing”: This one features a very large (and disgusting) centipede making its way across Lady Gaga’s face. Her eyes glow an unnatural green.
Speculations: I don’t really know what this one indicates, as far as the centipede goes. But from Lady Gaga’s glowing eyes and unnaturally pale complexion, I think it’s fair to say that she’s definitely not playing something entirely human.
“Sunset Stroll”: The sun is setting in this teaser, and as the light fades, the figures of what looks like a family with linked hands come near. They are entirely in silhouette, every feature blacked out—but their eyes are glowing.
Speculations: Aside from being ridiculously unnerving, this teaser calls to mind several things. For one thing, the silhouettes indicate that the family is from another time period, or at least are wearing something reminiscent of old farming clothes. Some people have mentioned “The Village of the Damned,” but they personally remind me of something called shadow people. Shadow people are exactly what they sound like, and like other ghosts, people claim to see them. No one is sure if they are demons or human spirits, but either way I don’t want them near me.
“Post Op”: A man with grimy skin is having the ?6 that is AHS’s official symbol for the season, stapled into his skull. The man stapling his skin tells him to “dry to keep it dry.”
Speculations: This conjures up a lot of images of horror/torture movies in general, but to me, it’s reminiscent of the mad doctor “Bloody Face” in season 2, particularly as staples are used to close wounds in surgery (that’s obviously not what’s happening here). There is a reference to real criminals in every season, and this may be a hint to that.
“What’s Cooking?”: A farmhouse sits in the middle of the field, looking fairly remote. Smoke curls above the chimney, forming the season 6 symbol again. A chainsaw begins to roar, and shrieking begins.
Speculation: Obviously this is referencing “Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” which was, like Bloody Face, based off of the crimes of real-life serial killer Ed Gein. The isolated location is making me think that the Midwest might be this season’s setting.
Tying it all together: Showrunners have said that this season is working with two different ideas, and two different time periods, as well as children. Tying together the children’s silhouettes, the lullaby clip, and the farmhouse, I’m vaguely reminded of “Children of the Corn.” I think the farmhouse may be one of the main locations, and that perhaps something horrible happened there dealing with a cult. As is usual with cult stories in horror, something inhuman may have been summoned, which would explain Lady Gaga’s eyes and the grabbing hands. Nothing is certain yet, but season 6 looks to be the most terrifying yet.
