Is Social Media Damaging Confidence?

As a young girl transitions into a young adult, it can be difficult to find yourself when society is telling someone how to be someone completely different. At the age of 19, a teen is heading into her 20’s, a time where college is a possibility, where growing is quite challenging yet exciting as you prepare yourself for the rest of the world.

High School was not always the best place to be with their dress codes, PDA restrictions, and social skills on pause because the bell rang too fast. Turning 18 means you are almost there to fight for yourself, and to be yourself. Why would you not want anything else?

Ariel Winter, the actress who plays Alex Dunphy in the comedy series Modern Family has been harassed on social media for the way she looks. While this may be common, it still raises an issue on body-shaming, self-esteem, and mental stability. Winter has fended off bullies before because she is proud of her body and wants to feel confident without pressure from people who she does not know.

She is a recognized role model for girls and women and she tells everyone to love themselves first, or at least try to because there will be people to knock you down.

Winter had the most to say when an unexpected person went to the media to talk about Ariel. To people’s surprise, it was her mom that was doing damage to Winter. Her mother reached out to InTouch to talk about her daughter’s social media account on Instagram, where Ariel is seen is outfits that her mother does not approve of.

Ariel’s relationship with her mother has not been in the best place, so is going in for an interview to get through to Ariel the solution? Her fans and Ariel do not seem to think so.

But the feisty actress fought back with a few words of her own, making her more of an inspiration to society. She went on to say she has been dealing with social media haters for far too long and she had enough.

She also wanted to say that her opinion is the only one that matters and if other individuals have a problem with her body, then they do not have to be involved in her life. There will always be people out there to hurt you, but you have to stand your ground and remember that there are qualities about yourself that bullies do not have.

Ariel does not want to wear or act like everyone else in Hollywood. That type of confidence is what society needs to see more of. It also helps a young woman feel comfortable in her own skin. It can be tough when you feel like you will never be perfect, but that is the whole point.

A flaw becomes a trait that either someone can relate to or does not have and that makes an individual unique and beautiful.
