Jessa Seewald Receives Backlash for Charging Fans to Attend Fashion Modesty Lecture

Duggar fashion: what can be said about it? The family is known for their conservative values surrounding their Christian beliefs. The tribe of children have been subjected to rigorous criteria surrounding the way that they dress, but this is especially true regarding how the women dress.

The single women of the family are forced to wear long skirts or loosely fitted dresses. These items must fall below the knee. As for their tops, the Duggar women are not allowed to wear sheer clothing. Their shoulders cannot be exposed. This falls true for their tummies as well. The girls are required to wear shirts with necklines that are not revealing.

In their book Growing Up Duggar, the eldest of the daughters spoke about their fashion choices saying, “We do not dress modestly because we are ashamed of the body God has given us; quite the contrary. We realize that our body is a special gift from God and that He intends for it to be shared only with our future husband.” They continue, “We avoid low-cut, cleavage-showing, gaping, or bare-shouldered tops; and when needed, we wear an undershirt. We try to make it a habit to always cover the top of our shirt with our hand when we bend over. We don’t want to play the peekaboo game with our neckline.”

Jessa Duggar announced that she will be talking to other women in a lecture called “Fashionably Modest with Jessa.” Then she said that she was going to charge her fans $20 per person to attend, and many people were not up for that saying that it was a bit immodest for her to charge people to listen to her talk about modesty. Others simply did not think that she had a good enough grasp of fashion to talk about it.

The Duggar women let their husbands decide what they wear. Recently married Joy-Anna Duggar said, “I said before that I don’t like dresses, but Austin likes them on me. So, I’m branching out and I’m wearing some dresses now.” She continued, “I don’t really have fashion. I just kind of wear whatever Austin likes. Before, I just wore whatever was in the closet. I’m trying to improve that.”

Jinger Duggar has dared to break the mold. She has been spotted wearing a sleeveless blouse, pants, and Jordans. Her husband said, “It is your liberty as to whether you dress modestly with a modest pair of pants, or with a skirt, or with a T-shirt, or with a blouse.” He continued, “It is not your liberty, women, to wear sensual, seductive clothing that is designed to draw the attention of your brothers.”

It brings into question whether or not the women dress so conservatively due to the fact that their brother, Josh Duggar, molested them when they were younger. It is terrible to think that the Duggar women could have been subjected to alter their fashion choices due to the actions of a family member in a situation where they had no control.

The Duggar parents released a statement and said, “Back 12 years ago, our family went through one of the most difficult times of our lives.” They went on, “When Josh was a young teenager, he made some very bad mistakes, and we were shocked. We had tried to teach him right from wrong. That dark and difficult time caused us to seek God like never before.” They added, “Even though we would never choose to go through something so terrible, each one of our family members drew closer to God. We pray that as people watch our lives they see that we are not a perfect family.”
